Abstract

Abstract: This article intends to be an introduction to Octavio Paz’s writings on Japan based on texts dating back from the period after his stay in Japan, in 1952. Thus, the article aims at discussing the reading and appropriation of Japanese literature and poetry made by Octavio Paz. Starting with the author’s conception of translation and his poetry experiment, Renga, the paper proceeds to map the Japanese poetic styles: tanka and renga, as well as the relation of Paz with the Japanese culture. Finally, the article points to the fact that the Mexican writer acts as an intellectual mediator in the cultural and literary movement among Japan, Latin America and the West.
